Criminal And Juvenile Justice

The Tata Trusts have been a long-standing supporter of the niche area of working with people who have been processed by the criminal justice system. Working closely within the criminal justice framework of the State, the focus has been on legal and psycho-social counselling of people in prisons and State institutions, support to children and families of prisoners, and interventions for social re-entry of released prisoners. Over the last two decades, over 52,000 clients and their families have been provided immersive legal and programmatic services and supports by the Trusts’ partners. As part of the criminal justice framework, the Trusts have recently begun supporting interventions for children and young adults in conflict with law. These interventions focus on children/young adults who are highly vulnerable to coming in conflict with law or are currently in conflict with law. The Trusts supports interventions which prevent children at risk from entering the juvenile justice system, protect the rights of children who are currently being processed by the system and ensures comprehensive rehabilitation opportunities to those who have been released.

The Trusts are concurrently and strategically investing in building sector leaders and new talent pools for both the criminal and juvenile justice sectors. This includes  working with cohorts of social entrepreneurs, building excellence in execution and enhancing strategic, technical and operational capabilities of implementers, broad-basing the portfolio to include a diverse range of cross-sectoral organisations (such as those working on livelihoods, skills, employability, citizenship, etc.)
