Institutional Strengthening Programme

In working with grassroots development organisations over the past decades to implement programmes across various themes and sectors, the Tata Trusts felt that sustained investment in building the human and operational aspects of the organisations could improve their overall programming as well as ensure sustainability in the long run. The long-term vision of the Trusts is to enable a cohesive eco-system for effective civil society action, thereby positively impacting the lives of marginalised communities.

The Civil Society Strengthening Unit of the Trusts was carved out from the erstwhile Civil Society, Governance and Human Rights Portfolio in 2014-15. It primarily has two functions: (a) To strengthen institutional capacities of partner and associate organisations; (b) To strengthen the larger ecosystem of Civil Society action. From being engaged with NGOs alone, the Unit has broadened its horizon and is exploring partnerships with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) teams, other donors, resource organisations, universities and social entrepreneurs.

In its effort to build a more robust civil society ecosystem, the Unit will work on building new talent tools for civil society work, facilitate resources to be channeled to underserved themes, regions and organisations and work on improving leadership for social enterprises and NGOs.
