In the 21st century, mental health is one of the most critical health requirements that society needs to address. It is estimated that 1 in every 4 families has a member suffering from a mental health disorder. 14% of the global burden of disease is caused by mental disorders. Mental illness is one of the 10 leading causes of disability in Asia.
In 2011, the Sir Ratan Tata Trust & Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust launched the Mental Health Initiative as a platform / catalyst to provide 'critical momentum to mental health action in the country and to significantly reduce the burden of mental illness'.

The programme also covers members of the homeless population with mental illness, who are rescued from the streets and provided shelter, food and treatment, and integrated with their families.
