Mission Garima

The city of Mumbai is home to multitudes. This, in turn, results in the city generating vast amounts of waste. Conservancy workers work hard in unsafe and hazardous conditions such as housegallis, sewers and manholes to keep the city clean.

The Tata Trusts in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), have developed the Mission Garima Programme to eliminate inhuman, unsafe and undignified working conditions from  sanitation work in Mumbai. The objective is to reduce manual intervention in sanitation  work and provide better working conditions for sanitation workers develop more sustainable disposal solutions for use in Mumbai’s dense urban areas. A pilot implementation, based on technological solutions, has been rolled out in two wards in Mumbai.

Primary health screening of conservancy workers is being conducted, and immediate treatment and referrals provided by MCGM through their health centres. Regular follow-ups and counselling will be provided by Swasth Foundation, a grantee of the Trusts.
