Importance of Early Application

DCF Secretary Laura Howard emphasized, “Kansas winters can be harsh and unpredictable. When temperatures fall, heating bills rise. By opening the LIEAP application period in mid-November, we’re hoping families will have the help they need to cover those higher heating bills and stay warm in their homes.”

Partnering Energy Companies

Several energy companies are partnering with DCF to facilitate the LIEAP application process:

  • Evergy: Hosting application events and providing assistance to customers.
  • Atmos Energy, Black Hills Energy, Kansas Gas Service, and Midwest Energy: Participating in application events within their service areas.

Beyond LIEAP, Kansas offers other programs to assist low-income households with energy costs:

  • Kansas Weatherization Assistance Program (K-WAP): Provides free home energy upgrades to improve energy efficiency and reduce bills.

The early opening of LIEAP applications reflects Kansas’s commitment to supporting its residents during the challenging winter months. Eligible households are encouraged to apply promptly to secure assistance with their heating costs, ensuring warmth and safety throughout the season.
